Pour 1990, Minardi s'est fait chiper le flat 12 Motori Moderni-Subaru par son compatriote Coloni dont Subaru vient de racheter 51 % des parts (Subaru se désengagera bien vite, le flat 12 étant une véritable calamité). Giancarlo reste "fidèle" au Cosworth, tout en prenant des contacts avec Yamaha, autrefois lié à Zakspeed qui vient de faire faillite.

Au volant de la M189 puis de la M190, conçues par Aldo Costa et Nigel Coperthwaithe, ni Martini, ni Paolo Barilla ne parviennent à inscrire de point bien que Pierluigi Martini réussisse une magnifique qualification en 2e position au GP des États-Unis. Les tractations avec Yamaha capotent, mais Minardi a un nouvel atout dans sa manche pour la saison suivante.
