En 1996, Flavio Briatore, qui avait failli être le fossoyeur de Minardi l'année précédente, vient en aide à l'écurie moribonde en mettant à disposition son jeune protégé Giancarlo Fisichella ainsi qu'une petite rallonge budgétaire.

La M195B engagée a été dégrossie par Costa avant son départ pour Ferrari, l'ingénieur Mauro Gennari se contentant de mettre l'ancienne M195 en conformité avec la réglementation 1996. Aucun pilote (Pedro Lamy, Giancarlo Fisichella, Giovanni Lavaggi et Tarso Marques) ne parvient à la faire briller. Fisichella réussit le meilleur résultat de la saison en terminant 8e au Canada.
